Buda, Texas Takes Steps to Expand Parkland with New "Eastside Park"

Buda Expanding
Buda, Texas, is significantly enhancing its recreational spaces by adding 30 acres of parkland on the east side of Interstate 35. This exciting development comes as the city purchased the land off Hillside Terrace, near the Green Meadows subdivision, for $6.1 million last month.
A Growing Need for Eastside Park
Currently, Buda manages 14 park facilities covering 363 acres of parkland. However, only two of these parks are located east of I-35. With the city's population increasing on the east side, Buda City Manager Micah Grau emphasized preserving and dedicating this land for park use before it could be developed for other purposes. "We’re experiencing quite a bit of population growth on the east side,” Grau said. “It was essential that we preserve and dedicate that land now while we could before it was developed”.
Planning for the Future
This new addition will be named "Eastside Park," Buda's 15th park facility. The next steps involve collaborating with city leaders, the public, and likely an outside consultant to plan the park's development. While a timeline for the park's transformation hasn't been established yet, funding from an $89 million bond election for transportation and park improvements will support the initial planning stages. Additionally, Hays County is contributing funds from a parks bond passed in 2020.
A Vision for Community Connection
Currently, the parkland is an open space with a few stock ponds. Grau mentioned that the city aims to connect Eastside Park to nearby neighborhoods, making it a convenient and enjoyable space for residents. The initial vision includes possibly opening the area as a passive-use park, allowing the community to start enjoying the space as soon as possible.
Conclusion
The development of Eastside Park represents a proactive approach by Buda city leaders to ensure that residents on the east side of I-35 have access to quality recreational spaces. This new park will provide a much-needed green space for the growing population and enhance Buda's overall quality of life.
